What's in a name? Parental leave or "desperate househusband"?

Last Updated: 01/07/2010

In 2009 the Australian government introduced a paid parental leave scheme which was a historic reform and big step for our country. Parents who are the primary caretaker of a child who were born or adopted after the 1st of January 2011 are entitled to the Paid Parental Leave (PPL) scheme.

While this is a great step for all working parents, will men be as willing as women to take advantage of this new PPL? For years, it has been socially acceptable for women to take maternity leave, put their careers aside and stay at home with their child while their husbands go and be the breadwinners.

The stigma of being a "househusband" may be too daunting for most men. After years of society's views on gender roles, it's understandable yet is no cause for shame. It is not only the perceived stigma that would stop a man from taking advantage of paid parental leave. Job security is also another major factor - a reasonable reason to be wary of taking time off even if it's paid.

If you know any men who have made the decision to become primary carers, give them your support. Feeling displaced and emasculated can cause many psychological and personal problems. Understand how difficult it is for the primary caretaker to make such a life and career changing transition. Remaining open and honest will make it easier on both parents through a seemingly unconventional situation.

In the end, the issue of parental leave should not be about gender. It should be about two people who want to give their child the best possible start in life. Perhaps if more people saw it that way, the stigma associated with men taking over the "maternal" role will slowly fade away.
